Although the Sanctuary is located in Alder Hey's 'tree house', this is only apparent from the outside. The concept was a simple one, to make the interior space reflect the tree house theme, the sense of being in a wood. The artwork is hand painted on veneered wood panels and fitted to the tapering walls to create a soft, woody embrace. The tree canopy imagery allows the eye to wander, picking out details, following organic curves. Suspended, gilded wooden leaves and a sculptural leaf skeleton for messages of prayer further help to create a quiet space, separate from the busy hospital environment.
'To enter a wood is to pass into a different world in which we ourselves are transformed'.
